Seller FAQ
What is Onbold?
Onbold is a Merchant of Record for online businesses. We take responsibility for the essential, repeatable parts of selling that every ecommerce business needs — payments, billing, transaction tax, Buyer transaction support, fraud, disputes, settlement and related commerce operations. You stay focused on the parts of the business that are uniquely yours and constantly evolving: Product, brand, storefront, pricing, marketing, customer acquisition and fulfilment. The idea is simple: keep control of what differentiates the business, and move more of the standard operating burden out of your scope. That also means more of the infrastructure required to sell is already in place, rather than depending on you assembling, integrating and maintaining it provider by provider.
What does Merchant of Record mean for my business?
It means Onbold becomes the retail seller to the Buyer and takes responsibility for the Buyer-facing commercial transaction. You supply the corresponding Product or service to Onbold under the Supplier relationship. In practice, your brand, Product and fulfilment remain yours, while Onbold handles the repeatable transaction infrastructure around the purchase. That can remove a substantial amount of operational work from your business and give you a more complete commerce setup from the outset.
Do I have to move my storefront or rebuild my existing setup?
No. Onbold is designed to fit around the parts of your business that already work. You can connect through supported Shopify and WooCommerce integrations, hosted Product pages, payment links, API and Onbold Commerce tools. No forced migration.
What does Onbold cost?
Standard pricing is 5.0% + €0.50 for domestic and intra-EU card sales. International card sales carry an additional 1.0% premium, for a total of 6.0% + €0.50. Lower pricing may be available based on volume, transaction mix and business profile.
Why is Onbold more expensive than a card processor?
Because Onbold is not only processing the card payment. The fee covers a wider operating model that includes payments, billing, transaction tax, Buyer operations, fraud, disputes, settlement and reporting. The relevant comparison is not Onbold versus a card-processing fee. It is Onbold versus the cost of operating the same capabilities yourself.
How quickly can I get approved?
Onbold uses AI, automation and modern verification tools to complete most of the underwriting work in minutes. Start with your website URL. The platform gathers and checks company, ownership, website, Product, fulfilment and other relevant evidence, then builds a detailed business picture for our underwriting team. A human expert reviews that evidence and makes the final commercial decision. In many cases, the main factor affecting approval time is how quickly any missing information can be provided by the Seller, rather than the time required for Onbold to perform the review.
Does AI approve my business?
No. AI and automation do the heavy lifting behind the review: collecting evidence, checking information, identifying gaps and presenting a structured business picture. A human expert makes the final approval decision. That matters because speed should not come at the expense of understanding. You go live with a business model Onbold has actually vetted, understood and approved.
What happens after I am approved?
Approval is followed by activation. You work with the Onbold team to confirm the setup, connect the relevant integration or sales tools, test the experience, verify the operating flow and prepare to go live. Once everything is ready, you begin selling through Onbold. After launch, the same evidence-led approach continues through ongoing monitoring, so the relationship stays aligned as the business evolves.
Does approval continue after launch?
Yes. Onbold uses automated monitoring and updated information to keep the business picture current over time. The purpose is not to create repeated manual reviews. It is to give both Onbold and the Seller enough visibility to stay aligned as Products, markets, fulfilment or other parts of the business change. When something material changes, it can be reviewed with context rather than starting again from scratch.
What kinds of businesses can use Onbold?
Onbold is designed for a broad range of online businesses, including:
- digital goods;
- digital content;
- SaaS;
- certain B2B services;
- ecommerce across many sectors;
- physical goods, including controlled dropshipping models.
Fit depends on the Product, business model, markets, fulfilment setup and overall risk profile. Licensed or regulated businesses are outside scope, as are higher-risk consumer Product categories including consumables, medical, research and pharmaceutical Products.
Check eligibility
Where can Sellers be based?
Onbold can onboard Sellers from a broad range of jurisdictions because participating Sellers join the platform as suppliers rather than as regulated payment-service merchants. We are not limited to EU or UK entities. Our preference is to work with businesses based in established commercial jurisdictions with reliable corporate, banking and fulfilment infrastructure. In practice, that includes much of Europe and North America, together with selected markets in Latin America and Asia. Eligibility still depends on the specific business, Product, ownership, operating model and risk profile rather than jurisdiction alone.
Do I need a company to use Onbold?
Not necessarily. Onbold can work with both companies and individuals where the business model is suitable and the required identity, ownership and operating information can be verified. For larger or more established businesses, a corporate entity will usually provide the clearest operating structure, but it is not a universal requirement.
Can I use Onbold for subscriptions and recurring payments?
Yes. Onbold supports recurring billing and subscription models, including the ongoing Buyer-facing payment and billing responsibilities that sit within the Merchant of Record relationship. Available implementation routes depend on how your current billing setup works.
How does tax work?
Onbold takes responsibility for the transaction tax attached to the Buyer purchase. That includes calculating, collecting, registering, filing and remitting applicable VAT, GST or sales tax, as well as determining where different treatment such as a valid B2B exemption may apply. For the Seller, the benefit is much bigger than tax calculation at checkout. The transaction-related VAT and sales-tax operation moves out of your scope and into the Onbold operating model. That means you do not need to build and maintain the same registration, calculation, filing and remittance infrastructure across every market you enter.
Can I sell physical goods through Onbold?
Yes, where the fulfilment model is professional, reliable and trackable. You remain responsible for delivery, while Onbold connects tracking and delivery information back to the Buyer Order. For cross-border physical goods, the fulfilment model also needs to handle duties and import treatment in a way that avoids unexpected charges for the Buyer.
Can I keep my existing 3PL or fulfilment provider?
Usually, yes. As part of setup, Onbold confirms which carriers, 3PLs and fulfilment providers you use and makes sure the required delivery information can flow back into the Order. The goal is to connect to a fulfilment operation that already works, not replace it.
Who handles refunds, disputes and chargebacks?
Onbold handles the Buyer-facing transaction responsibilities that sit within its Merchant of Record role, including refunds, fraud, disputes and chargebacks. You may still need to provide Product, service or fulfilment information where it is relevant to resolving the issue.
Who supports the Buyer?
Onbold handles purchase-related support around the transaction, including Order information, receipts, refunds and related Buyer issues. You remain responsible for Product-use, technical, licence, fulfilment or service-delivery support where that sits with your business.
Will Buyers know that Onbold is involved?
Yes. Onbold is the Merchant of Record and appears in the Buyer-facing purchase relationship, including transaction records and payment descriptors. The Seller’s brand remains central to the Buyer experience, while Onbold’s role is made clear where required.
What happens if my business changes after launch?
If the Product, markets, fulfilment or business model changes materially, Onbold may need to review the change. This is not intended to restart onboarding from scratch. The purpose is to keep the relationship aligned with the business we actually understand.
